The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of six countries which make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), a body established in 1981 to strengthen cooperation in key sectors (agriculture, industry, investment, security and trade) among its member. The GCC is made up of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen.
Situated at the north-eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, the UAE covers an area of 83,600 square kilometers. It is bordered by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the south and west, and the Sultanate of Oman to the east and north. Its coastline borders both the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf and is south of hte strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Formally established on 2 December 1971, the UAE is a constitutional federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah.
